Senovės Egipto gyventojai dalijasi į labai skirtingas ir uždaras klases. Tokia socialinė struktūra gali būti palyginta su piramide, kurio viršūnėje yra faraonas. Faraonas – tai tikra dievybė, nes jis – dievo Amono Ra sūnus. Jis absoliutus šalies valdovas. Faraonas vadovauja politikai ir administracijai, padedamas vizirio, savo pirmojo ministro, provincijų valdytojų ir tūkstančių valdininkų. Faraonas – taip pat ir kariuomenės vadas. Kaip religijos galva, šventyklas tvarkyti jis patiki žyniams. Faraonui priklauso visos žemės, išskyrus tas, kurias jis perleidžia šventykloms, ir tas, kurias padovanoja aukštiems valdininkams ar kariškiams.
